Back-to-School: Dana’s Movie & Jewelry Recs

The beginning of the school year is approaching sooner than we know it! Whether you’re back to hitting the books this fall or it’s been a few decades since you’ve stepped foot in a classroom, what better way is there to celebrate this new chapter in our lives than with back-to-school movies? I love that my favorite films capture the excitement and nostalgia of starting a new academic year, so I wanted to share my top five watches with you. Check out these films when you want to be transported back to your school memories: the good, the bad, and the awkward! Along with each movie, I’ve included jewelry suggestions to help you emulate the unique cinematic style of each film in your own looks. Now it’s time to grab some popcorn and a fellow movie-lover because class is in session!

The Breakfast Club (1985)

The Breakfast Club is a classic 80’s film that has withstood the test of time with its portrayal of five high school students from different cliques undergoing a Saturday detention together. It was important to me that I show my kids this film and share the message that there is often more to a stereotype than meets the eye. The whole family can enjoy this John Hughes staple, and I promise you’ll be laughing and crying by the time Bender is pumping his fist in the air to the sound of “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)

“Life moves pretty fast… If you don’t stop around once in a while, you could miss it.” Ferris’ words rings loud and clear throughout this fun-filled adventure. Another great John Hughes’ film in which three high school kids perform elaborate schemes to skip class and have a wild day exploring downtown Chicago. As someone who lives in the Chicago suburbs, this movie has a special place in my heart; it does a great job of showing off the beauty of my local city. The parade scene in particular always brings a smile to my face. I highly recommend you watch this film to live vicariously through Ferris and his reckless endeavors.

Dead Poets Society (1989)

“O Captain! My Captain!” Dead Poets Society follows an all-boys elite prep class as their new English teacher uses unorthodox methods to teach them how to pursue their dreams and seize the day. This movie tugs at my heartstrings in the best way, especially with Robin William’s powerful performance. He teaches a group of students to break out of their shells and make their lives extraordionary: an idea that I think any viewer can apply to their own lives.

As Mr. Keating says, “No matter what anyone tells you, words and ideas can change the world.” Express your love for language with our personalized Morse Code Bracelets and Side Initial Necklaces!

Freaky Friday (2003)

In Freaky Friday, a mother and daughter wake up to discover that they have switched bodies. They pretend to be each other as they try to find a solution to their strange problem and ultimately discover the power of putting yourself in someone else's shoes… literally. As a mom myself, I can’t help but relate to Lindsey Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis’ characters in this movie. They portray mother/daughter relationships in a way that I think is refreshing and accurate to this complicated but unconditional bond. For this reason, I recommend watching Freaky Friday with the mothers and daughters in your life for its laugh-out-loud moments and heartwarming ones alike.

Match Lindsey Lohan’s punk rock style in this film with our bold statement earrings like the Sunburst Huggies and Beaded Huggies.

Grease (1978)

The characters in Grease may sing reminisce on their “Summer Nights” but I think this movie’s exciting portrayal of 1950’s high school culture is the perfect watch on a school night too! It’s hard not to sing along to these musical tunes that many of us grew up with. While I don’t approve of Sandy changing herself for a man at the end of the film (Tell me about it, stud!), I still think it's worth a watch to follow the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds throughout their senior year shenanigans.

I hope this list helps you find a new go-to movie to kick off the academic year! Good luck to everyone headed back to class this fall. I’m wishing you all a happy beginning to your own personal back-to-school movie.
